How this calculator works

Your TFSA room starts accumulating in the year you turn 18 (or the year you became a Canadian tax resident, if that’s later), at the full annual limit for that year - the CRA does not pro-rate. Every year after adds that year’s new limit, and unused room carries forward forever.

Two rules do most of the damage. Contributions reduce your room the moment they happen, across all of your TFSAs combined. And a withdrawal only comes back on the next January 1 - re-contributing it in the same year is the classic way Canadians end up over their limit without noticing. If your total contributions ever exceed your earned room plus withdrawals from before this year, the difference is an excess, taxed at 1% per month.

Common questions

Why doesn’t this match the TFSA room shown in CRA My Account?

The CRA’s figure is built from reports your banks and brokerages send once a year, so it usually lags months behind and misses your current-year activity entirely. The CRA itself tells Canadians to keep their own records. Your own contribution and withdrawal totals are the source of truth.

Do TFSA withdrawals add back to my room right away?

No. A withdrawal is added back to your contribution room on January 1 of the following year - never in the same year. Re-contributing a withdrawal in the same year is the most common way Canadians accidentally over-contribute.

What if I have TFSAs at more than one bank or brokerage?

Add every account together. The CRA looks at your combined contributions and withdrawals across all of your TFSAs - no single institution can see your total room.
